Instructions for installing RAVEN jump / break tips.
Tips are oversized to fit either a 13mm or 14mm shaft. Best results are achieved with very hard, capped ferrules, but even with regular non-capped ferrules these tips will outperform every other tip we have tested. The tips are pre-shaped for a good jump or break curvature. Note: We have found that slightly flattening the tip when used as a break tip may produce better results if the player does not use english (spin) on the break. Some users also report that a tiny flat spot on the very tip (of the tip) when used as a jump tip may also improve performance. Ideally the tips are installed by a cue maker or experienced cue repairperson. For the do-it-yourselfer please follow the instructions below.
Care should be taken to center the tip when it is installed so the tip is not offset. These tips are hard and not easily reshaped without machine tools. We suggest using gel superglue. Epoxy glue will work too, but requires pressure application for a much longer time. Regular watery superglue may not hold.
The old tip should be removed and the ferrule should be faced off with an appropriate cutting tool. Scuff the tip and the faced off ferrule with 60 grit sandpaper. Take care to not round the edges of either the ferrule or the tip. Both must be completely flat for a solid bond. Finer grit sandpaper probably won t provide a good enough surface to hold the tip in place. When both the tip and the ferrule are properly roughened put a thin coat of gel superglue on the tip of the ferrule. Position the tip and apply firm pressure with a live center while the shaft is in the jaws of a padded lathe chuck. If a lathe or tipping machine with a pressure bonding system is not available traditional pipe clamps should work. As a last resort, applying pressure by pressing the shaft, with the tip installed, against a hard surface may work. We usually give the gel superglue a minute or two to set up.
Remove the excess material with an appropriate cutting tool taking care to not scar the ferrule. Ideally this is done while the shaft is spinning in a lathe or tipping machine. Be sure to use a pad to prevent scarring the shaft. Any re-shaping of the tip can easily be done at this time with a medium file. If such equipment is not available, a belt and disk sanding machine or even a dremel rotary tool can be used if great care is taken. As a last resort hold the shaft securely with a padded vice or clamping device. Remove the excess material and reshape the tip, if needed, with a medium file.
Guarantee:
Try either tip for 30 days. If this tip isn't the best legal jump tip you've ever used we'll send your money back. Just return what is left of the tip (or tips) with a self addressed stamped envelope. We will verify it was purchased from us and refund your purchase price.
