Most pool players feel pretty good to run a rack or two of 8 ball or 9 ball. It feels great and looks impressive if there is no luck (slop) involved. We all love to shoot that perfect game. But there are perfect games and then there are "perfect games". Click below to view a "perfect game".
In snooker there are a maximum of 147 points on the table if each red ball is followed by the seven ball and the 2 ball thru 7 ball are pocketed (or potted as the British would say) in consecutive order. It is possible to score higher than 147 on a single run if your opponent fouls just before you begin to shoot, but 147 is the maximum break without a foul. If you have ever played snooker you have a feel for how difficult a task it really is to run the table.
If you aren't a snooker player the balls are much smaller than pool balls and the pockets are tiny. Not only are the pockets tiny but the rails have rounded edges at the mouth of the pocket. The American table is 5 feet wide by 10 feet long. The British table is 6 feet wide by 12 feet long. Any ball not hit dead center in the pocket just won't go. Ronnie O'Sullivan shoots that perfect 147 point game in a snooker tournament covered by the BBC.
This 147 break (run of points) came in 1997. At last count Ronnie O'Sullivan had achieved this feat eight times in his career. This one is special because it is a World Record for the fastest ever run of 147 points. Again, at last count, O'Sullivan has recorded the five fastest 147s in snooker history.
